Effects of Rural Workers
With the rapid development of our country in recent years, the number of rural residents who pour into big cities to find jobs is increasing so as to meet the growing demand of labors in cities construction. These rural "immigrants" find their jobs in various fields: they work on construction sites, serve in restaurants and hair saloons doing the lower-ranking jobs. They render cities a new source of labor force and poured cities with new vigor. This phenomenon has a great impact on cities and aroused public concerns. It seems hard to tell whether it is a blessing or a curse.
Some city dwellers don't welcome these rural immigrants. They look down upon them and always find fault with them. It's undeniable that many problems emerged with their coming. We can always find rural workers who sleep on the pavement, who are sloppily dressed in public places and who don't obey traffic laws. Some of them don't have a sense of social order and act the way they like. Those who discriminate against rural workers complain that they deteriorate the image and status of big cities. Some citizens also believe that they are the chief culprits of the rising crime rate. It's inevitable that not every rural worker is competitive enough for a job and some may run the risk of violating laws to gain illegal incomes.
However, in my humble opinion, the demerits of the ruralinvasion could not wipe out the merits that they have made great contributions to the progress of our society. We should not forget the arduous work they take on to make our city beautiful and modern. We should not forget their devotion to the basic construction of our society. With heart and soul, they sacrifice their whole youth without any complaints. Thus, they cannot merely be evaluated by the demerits they brought. Without these indus trious workers, skyscrapers could not have been erected; roads could not have been paved; bridges could not have been built. Therefore, I want to remind those who discriminate against rural workers, the prosperity of the cities owes a lot to them the constructors of our beautiful city and the builders of our prosper ous life. It is gratitude and respect we need to show these heroes, not disdain.
China has a large population of 1. 3 billion, of which 900 million live in rural areas. Most of the rural residents are still struggling under the poverty line. The immigrants have heavy burdens to support their poor families. Working in cities is a good opportunity but also a great challenge for these newcomers. The challenge not only lies in survival but also in the relationship with local residents. Some city habitants disdain rural workers, while the rural workers also have a deep prejudice against us.Both sides need better understanding and more communication. If there were no prejudice, there would be more understanding and respect and there would be no conflicts.
第二段展示了一幅熟悉的民工场面,“We cart always find rural workers who sleep by the street, who are sloppily dressed lnpublic placesand who don~t obeytrafficlaws.”使人自然联想到那些对他们的责难。但第三段笔锋一转,亮出自己的观点:“Without these industrual workersskyscrapers cOuld not have beenerected;roads cOuld nOt have been built.”并进——步指出,“they are the exploit of Our beautiful city and the builder of our prosperous life.”在这两种相反的态度之间,我们需要反省,需要了解他们的处境和心理,这样才能真正地相互理解,达成更有效的沟通。
